WHAT IS VOIP
VOIP is Voice over IP, which is a technology (protocol) for transmitting (sending) VOICE through the internet. Traditionally, PSTN is the network used to make / receive Phone calls, indirectly sending/receiving audio signal between two parties on call. The Cost of Maintaining PSTN is very high for any government or organization, this is the main reason, national (local & long distance) and international calls are high.
Internet is another network comparable to PSTN, which is used to send/receive data between two peers (computers, servers, mobile...), Internet is the most powerful network to share anything that is related to data. Internet is an independent network, so anybody can be a part of it at any time and anybody can plug in & out anytime of this network, the cost of maintaining it is distributed to the common public and is very cheap.
VOIP is a technology, that bridge between these two networks, PSTN and Internet, which is designed to use the best of the advantages of both these networks, predominantly the Internet. VOIP can be used to originate (make) a call from Internet (an IP/a computer/IP Phone) which can eventually be routed to a PSTN network and terminate that call to a common telephone user. VOIP can also be used to originate (make) a telephone call from a PSTN network that can be terminated to an Internet (an IP/ a computer/IP Phone). So the cost of making/receiving call will be very cheap.
